April 13, 2018 | Softball
STORRS, Conn.  – Freshman RHP Whitney Sanford threw a complete game and senior Meredith Burroughs hit her team-leading 11th home run of the season to lift ECU past UConn 2-1 in an American Athletic Conference series opener at Burrill Family Field.
Â
The teams will conclude the series Saturday with a doubleheader beginning at Noon due to the threat of inclement weather in the forecast Sunday.

How it Happened
ECU opened the scoring in the top of the first inning when freshman Tyler King led off reaching third on a fielding error in left field and scored via a sacrifice fly off the bat of classmate Ashleigh Inae. Burroughs then put the Pirates ahead 2-0 with a solo home run to center field.
Â
The Huskies cut into the lead in the bottom of the fifth, using a Samantha Barnett RBI double to make the score 2-1. UConn then loaded the bases, but Sanford induced a foul out to left field to terminate the threat. Both pitchers settled in from there as ECU claimed the one-run victory.
