ECU Places Seventh At The American Championships

PALM HARBOR, Fla. – ECU finished in seventh-place at the 2018 American Athletic Conference Men's Golf Championships held at the Innisbrook Resort & Golf Club.

The Pirates carded a 6-over-par 290 Tuesday to finish at 25-over-par 877 (292-295-290) for the tournament.

USF claimed the team title for the fourth consecutive season with a three-day total of 10-under-par 842 (284-279-279), finishing 20 strokes in front of second-place SMU (290-292-280=862).UCF claimed third-place at 13-over-par (289-295-281=865) followed by Memphis (+19), Cincinnati (+21) and Houston (+23).

USF's Claudio Correa claimed individual medalist honors with a 54-hole score of 6-under-par 207 (71-67-69). USF's Jimmy Jones (71-70-69) and Cristian DiMarco (71-69-70) tied for second-place at 3-under-par 210 along with Cincinnati's Davis Baxter (70-70-70).

Sophomore Patrick Stephenson posted the Pirates' lowest score of the tournament with a 3-over-par 216 (73-72-71) and finished tied for 11th. Senior Tim Conover tied for 21st at 6-over-par 219 (72-77-70) with fellow senior Jackson Spires (73-74-74) and sophomore Blake Taylor two strokes behind him in 24th at 8-over-par 221. Freshman Tim Bunten tied for 39th at 13-over-par 226 (74-77-75).
"Unfortunately we just couldn't get the momentum going our way today," ECU Head Coach Andrew Sapp said. "While many teams were shooting under par we could not catch them. Tim played well in his final American conference round and Jackson birdied his last championship hole.
"Patrick again led the way for us this week and as one of three underclassmen who will get to come back to Copperhead. They all learned valuable lessons for their futures."
