May 09, 2018 | Softball
TAMPA, Fla.  – RHP Erin Poepping has been named to the 2018 American Athletic Conference All-Freshman Team, according to a release by the league Wednesday afternoon.
Â
She is the first Pirate to be selected to a conference all-freshman team since Meredith Mitchell earned a spot on the Conference USA All-Freshman Team in 2013.
Â
Poepping compiled a 13-15 overall record with a 3.36 earned run average during the regular season, striking out 92 batters in 159.1 innings pitched. She twirled two complete-game shutouts, blanking St. John's in her first collegiate appearance to open the season Feb. 9 before limiting Wichita State to three hits and striking out five in a 5-0 Pirate victory over the Shockers April 28. Poepping tallied at least five strikeouts in seven appearances, including a career-best eight in a 13-2 win over Arkansas-Pine Bluff March 9 in Hawai'i.
Â
In conference games, Poepping was 5-7 with a 3.73 ERA and 28 strikeouts. She turned in five complete games and picked up wins over Houston, Connecticut and Wichita State as well as a pair of victories against AAC regular season champion USF. Thanks in large part to Poepping's efforts, ECU was the only team during the regular season to hand the Bulls a series loss in conference play.
Â
In her last 12 appearances, Poepping is 5-5 with a 2.88 ERA and 27 strikeouts in 51 innings pitched. One of her four complete-game efforts during the stretch was in a 2-1 victory over NC State in Greenville April 25.
