Â
GREENVILLE, N.C. -Â For the seventh consecutive year, the East Carolina women's tennis team garnered the Intercollegiate Tennis Association (ITA) All-Academic Team award while ten individuals were named ITA Scholar-Athletes.
Â
"I am very proud of our team's accomplishments this year," head coach Tom Morris said. "We had a very, very good year on the court with the best national and regional ranking in our program's history. We won the regional community service award for the most community service hours of all schools in our region and we also won the American Athletic Conference Award for the best GPA in women's tennis. This is the seventh year in a row that we have won ITA All Academic award and this year we have 10 players which were named to the ITA Scholar Athlete Award, the most in NCAA Division I! This is award is a result of hard work in the classroom, and a great statement about our team and program. I want to thank Nita Boyce and her staff for their support, for this would not be possible without their help."      Â
Â
Of the 10 Pirate honorees, six were named ITA Scholar-Athletes for at least the second time. Sarah Sarjoo leads the way as she was chosen by the ITA for the fourth consecutive year. Earning the honor for the third time was Meredith Smith and Maria Gomez while Celia Ruiz, Lisa Hofbauer and Nastja Rettich were all named ITA Scholar-Athletes for the second consecutive year. Sofia Anthony, Alisa Diercksen, Victoria Dixon and Annija Veinsteina were all named for the first time in their careers. The ten selections for ECU are the most in the country.
Â
The ITA All-Academic Team award is open to any ITA program that has a cumulative team grade point average of 3.20 or above (on a 4.00 scale). All varsity letterwinners are factored into the cumulative team GPA from the 2017-18 academic year.
Â
Along with the academic award, the ITA also awarded the Pirates the Carolina Region's ITA Community Service Award. It is the second consecutive year that ECU has earned that award, along with earning the ITA's National Community Service Award in 2017.
Â
The Pirates add the ITA awards to their American Athletic Conference Team Academic Excellence Award after they earned for the best GPA in women's tennis during the last academic year.
