Hart Agrees To Three-Month Extension As ECU Special Advisor For Athletics

GREENVILLE, N.C. - Dave Hart, who has served as a special advisor to the chancellor for athletics at East Carolina University since March 15, has agreed to a three-month extension to remain in the same role according to an announcement by ECU Chancellor Cecil Staton Tuesday.
Hart's assignment to provide operational and strategic guidance for the department was initially set to expire Sept. 15. Under the terms of the extension, his appointment will now run through Dec. 15, 2018.
"We are exceptionally grateful Dave has agreed to continue his evaluation of our athletics program," Staton said. "His profound insight has been a critical resource in assessing not only where we are, but where we need to be. It is imperative we maintain this progress, sustain the utilization of information and continue to address evolving components that will allow us to be in a position of stability for future leadership."
The extension will enable Hart to observe a full football season and related activities, including the Pirates' game-day environment at Dowdy-Ficklen Stadium. He will also be in a position to experience the start of basketball season while providing insight for building long-term success for both programs. Additionally, from a comprehensive standpoint, Hart's continued assessment will focus on student-athlete services and welfare which impacts all 20 ECU teams. He will also be prioritizing and assisting with future planning objectives to include fundraising strategies.
"It has been very gratifying to assist ECU in the role of special advisor to Chancellor Staton on matters pertaining to athletics," Hart said. "Chancellor Staton has been extremely positive and intentional relative to doing all he can to help the athletics program move forward in a strategic fashion.
"I welcome the opportunity to remain on board throughout the football season and the start of the basketball season to assist and support coach (Scottie) Montgomery as well as all of our coaches, department staff and student-athletes."
In addition to serving in an advising capacity for the chancellor and conducting an extensive assessment for athletics administrative units during his first five months of duty, Hart, at the request of the chancellor, led the men's basketball head coaching search which resulted in the hiring of Joe Dooley.
Hart has provided upgrade guidance for the recently-completed football locker and meeting rooms; sports medicine treatment and rehabilitation amenities; and serviceable equipment operations space in the Ward Sports Medicine Building. The student-athlete support improvements are the first phase of the Dowdy-Ficklen Stadium Southside Renovation Project and remain ongoing with overall completion scheduled for the summer of 2019. Hart will continue to advise the chancellor on current and future facility needs.

Hart first joined ECU's Athletics Department in 1983 and was named associate director of athletics for external relations and executive director of the Pirate Club in 1985 before serving as AD from 1987 to 1995. His career included top athletic administrative assignments at Florida State, Alabama and Tennessee before announcing in August of 2016, his plan to retire in the spring of 2017. Hart currently owns his own consulting and advising firm, Athletics Legacy Partners, LLC.
