GREENVILLE, N.C. – The ECU track and field program will face stiff competition this weekend when it travels to Penn State University for the Penn State National Open. The two-day event begins Friday, Jan. 25, inside the Ashenfelter III Indoor Track.
Â
Among the many schools scheduled to compete are Army, Georgetown, Maryland, Pittsburgh and West Virginia in addition to the host Nittany Lions.
Â
"Each and every year that we attend this meet, we always produce some high-level marks," Director of Men's and Women's Track and Field and Cross Country Curt Kraft said. "This is the time of the season we start looking to turn the corner, so to speak. We have two meets under our belts and all the athletes pretty much know where they stand at this point.
Â
Sophomore Sommer Knight leads the American Athletic Conference in the pole vault with a school-record mark of 4.14 meters cleared last week at the Hokie Invitational. She is also ranked 22nd nationally. Senior Hakeem Horton won the long jump in Blacksburg and improved to third on the league performance list and 24th on the NCAA chart.
Â
Currently, the Pirates have 16 athletes inside the top eight in the conference in their respective events.
Â
"From this point forward, it's very important that everyone starts to make some huge improvements on their marks," Kraft added. "Both teams were very excited about coming off last weekend's meet, so we need to continue the momentum into this weekend."
