Pirates Pick Up A Pair Of Wins In Annapolis
January 26, 2019 | Men's Tennis
Annapolis, Md. – With another pair of wins, the ECU men's tennis team continued its perfect start to the season by topping Navy and Mount St. Mary's on Saturday.
"We got off to a rough start in doubles against Navy, but the guys responded really well in singles and got up on them quick on a bunch of courts and never looked back," said assistant coach Ian Van Cott. "Great job to Diogo (Marques) getting his first win at No. 1 against a really good player. A bunch of guys really stepped up today and played really well. We will have a nice day off and look to have a good week of practice as we turn our sights to next weekend's matches."
Of the two matches, the first against Navy was the tighter contest. For the first time this season, the Pirates dropped the doubles point. Navy's 60th-ranked doubles pairing of Jack Dabek and Derrick Thompson topped Vlad Anghel and Ronny Georgi 6-3 on court two. ECU answered when Will Bissett and Javier Renones beat Navy's Matthew Lee and Peter Lohrbach 6-4 on court three. With the doubles point being decided on court one, it went to the Midshipmen when Jake Fishkin and Andrew Ton topped Wisse Jonker and Diogo Marques 6-3.
Needing a quick start in singles to regain its balance, ECU got it when five Pirates won their first set. The match was tied momentarily when Jonker rattled off a 6-1, 6-1 win over Lohrbach. However, Navy regained the edge when Thompson closed out a 6-0, 6-2 win over Anghel.
After Thompson's win, the rest of the match went ECU's way. Renones, who had played a tight first set with Lee, cruised in the second set for a 6-4, 6-0 win. The Pirates took the lead when Bissett finished off a 6-4, 6-1 win over Jack Dabek. The match-clinching point was earned by Georgi, who beat Fishkin 6-1, 7-5.
The only match to require a third set was on court one. Marques, playing on the top court for the first time in his collegiate career, had won the first set in a tiebreaker but dropped the second set 4-6 against Andrew Ton. In the third set tiebreaker, Marques outlasted Ton 12-10 in the tiebreaker for the victory.
In the second match of the day, the Pirates did not drop a single set. The pairings of Anghel/Marques (6-2), Georgi/Jonker (6-2) and Renones/Bissett (6-1) earned easy wins in doubles.
In singles, ECU did not drop a single set. Anghel (court one), Marques (court two), Jonker (court three), Renones (court four) and Bissett (court six) all earned their second wins of the day while Austin Allen moved onto court five and picked up a win. Jonker is now 4-0 on the season while Bissett and Renones are 3-0 in dual matches.
ECU is now 4-0 for the third straight season. Nav drops to 4-2 while Mount St. Mary's is 0-3.
ECU returns to action next with a pair of home matches. First up is a 2:30 p.m., Friday match against George Mason followed by a 12 noon date against UNC Asheville on Sunday.
