Labbe, Tamagnone Reach ITA Regional Quarterfinals
October 21, 2019 | Men's Tennis
CARY, N.C. – The fall season ended with a quarterfinal appearance for the ECU men's tennis team as the Pirates competed at the ITA Carolina Regional Championships at Cary Tennis Park.
Â
"Great event for both Agustin (Tamagnone) and Simon (Labbe), they both did very well in singles and had some very solid wins throughout the weekend," said head coach Shawn Heinchon. "On the doubles side of things, this is by far the best doubles we've played this fall. It's been a couple years since we have had some of our guys do so well at regionals. It was good to see their hard work paying off. Congrats to both of them."
Â
Simon Labbe finished the fall strong, going 4-1 in singles and 3-1 in doubles play over the weekend. The sophomore from Quebec, Canada dropped his opening singles match against Cole Groetsch from UNCW, but stormed through the consolation draw. Labbe beat players from Davidson, Presbyterian and a pair from Charlotte to reach the semifinals of the consolation draw and finish the fall with a team-best 11 singles victories.
Â
Labbe may have been even better in doubles play. Labbe and Agustin Tamagnone were paired together for the first time, but that did not stop them from becoming the first Pirates to reach the quarterfinals of the ITA Regional Championships since Kasey Countee and Freddie McGeehan did so in 2016. Labbe and Tamagnone defeated a pairing from UNCW to open play and then advanced to the round of 16 by knocking off a duo from UNC Greensboro.
Â
The Pirate pair came up against Ladd Harrison and Mark Dillon from North Carolina in the round of 16. After the pairs split the first two sets, Labbe and Tamagnone pulled out the win in the third set tiebreaker. The run finally came to an end in the quarterfinal when Labbe and Tamagnone were beaten by Jake Munns and Jake Bhangdia from Furman.
Â
Along with his play in doubles, Tamagnone also won a pair of singles matches. The transfer from Southern Utah opened the tournament with a win over Winthrop's Abhimanyu Vannemreddy and then topped Davidson's Sam Kavarana. Although he fell in the third round to Duke's Garrett Johns, Tamagnone will finish the fall with a 10-5 singles record, trailing only Labbe for the team lead in wins.
Â
ECU will return to action in February for the spring portion of its schedule. The full dual match schedule will be released later this fall.
