Marques Named AAC Player Of The Month
October 08, 2019 | Men's Tennis
GREENVILLE, N.C. – After an undefeated start to his sophomore campaign, Diogo Marques of the ECU men's tennis team was named the American Men's Tennis Player of the Month, as announced by the league office on Tuesday afternoon.
Â
"This is well deserved for Diogo," said head coach Shawn Heinchon. "He has put a lot of hard work in both on and off the court not only since he's been back, but also over the summer. It's great to see all that paying off for him."
Â
Marques is a perfect 8-0 on the singles court so far this fall. The Setubal, Portugal native won his first collegiate trophy when he won his draw at the Liberty Invitational. In his four matches, Marques had to fight back from a first-set deficit to win and he needed a third-set tiebreaker to clinch the title in the final. Marques followed it by going a perfect 4-0 at the UNCG Fall Invite, winning all four in straight sets.
Â
It is the first conference honor of Marques' ECU career. He is now 27-11 in singles play during his time as a Pirate after a 19-11 ledger as a freshman. Marques is the first ECU player to be named American Player of the Month since joining the conference in 2014.
Â
ECU will return to action this weekend at the Richmond Fall Tournament. Play is scheduled to get started on Friday, Oct. 11.
