GREENVILLE, N.C. – Needing a win to snap a three-game losing streak, the ECU women's basketball team will return home to host Maryland Eastern Shore on Saturday in the Pirates' Diabetes Awareness game.
Â
ECU (1-4) has dropped three straight games, including a 53-40 loss at VCU on Wednesday. The Pirates have struggled to score in that stretch, averaging just 51.7 points and shooting 32.1% from the field. Lashonda Monk leads the team in scoring (16.6 ppg) and assists (3.4 apg) while Taniyah Thompson (13.2 ppg) is also scoring in double figures. On the defensive end, Monk has been a menace, as she leads the country in steals with 23, including seven against VCU. The Pirates are second in the NCAA as a team, racking up 74 steals and 14.8 per game, with Monk, Dominique Claytor (6th) and Raven Johnson (68th) all in the top-70 in the country in steals. The Pirates will hope to get Johnson back on the floor, as the senior is leading ECU in rebounding (8.3 rpg) despite missing the game at VCU due to an injury.
Â
Maryland Eastern Shore (1-4) has also had its own problems scoring, with the Hawks averaging just 53.2 points a night. The Hawks have lost four straight games, all by at least 15 points. Amanda Carney (9.6) and Bairesha Gill-Miles (9.5 ppg) are the top scorers for Maryland Eastern Shore while Carney also leads the team in rebounding (4.4 rpg). Adrienne Jones is the top deep threat for UMES, as she has taken 35 shots from behind the arc and as a team, the Hawks have let loose 118 triples, good for 19th-most in the nation. The Hawks are allowing 68.8 points per game to opponents and are getting outrebounded by an average of 7.2 boards.
Â
It will be the fourth straight season that ECU and Maryland Eastern Shore have met on the court and the fifth time overall. The Pirates have won all four matchups, each one taking place in Minges Coliseum. Last season, the two teams opened the season against each other and ECU took an 84-69 win behind 19 points from both Monk and Johnson. Maryland Eastern Shore is one of eight schools that ECU has beaten at least four times without losing. With a win on Tuesday over the Hawks, ECU will have won its first five meetings against 11 different opponents, including Duke, Hampton, Longwood, UNCW and head coach Kim McNeill's alma mater, Richmond.
Â
Tipoff is scheduled for 2 p.m., and the first 500 fans will receive a blue Diabetes Awareness Ribbon. Fans can buy tickets for the game here, watch it here or follow the live stats here. Â
