
East Carolina Falls In Three At UCF

ORLANDO, Fla. – East Carolina dropped a three-set match (13-25, 16-25, 23-25) to American Athletic Conference foe UCF Friday evening inside the Venue.

Junior Bri Wood led the Pirates with nine kills and a .214 hitting percentage while redshirt junior Brandee Markwith collected 17 digs. McKenna Melville paced the Knights with 18 kills.

UCF (19-6, 12-1 AAC) hit .345 on the strength of 49 kills, limiting ECU (18-9, 5-8 AAC) to 34 kills and .160 efficiency. The Pirates did hold the Knights to just five blocks, well under their season average, but UCF held the upper hand in the total digs column, 65-52.

East Carolina called an early timeout in the opening set when a UCF kill put the score at 9-4 in the Knights' favor. UCF stretched its lead all the way to 20-9 before closing it out by 12.

The second set was much closer to start as the teams were tied at six after a home team service error. The Knights started to pull away, going in front 14-9 thanks to an Amber Olson kill. The Pirates called a timeout trailing 21-14 but could not put much more of a dent into the deficit. Kristina Fisher finished things off with a kill to give UCF a two-set advantage at the intermission.

Attempting to extend the match, ECU hung with the Knights in the third. An attacking error by the Knights gave the Pirates a 15-14 advantage midway through and Tyson kept East Carolina ahead 16-15 with a kill. ECU led 22-20 late but UCF ripped off a match-ending 5-1 run.
