ECU Blanks Appalachian State 4-0
February 10, 2019 | Men's Tennis
GREENVILLE, N.C. – In a quick match, the ECU men's tennis team shutout Appalachian State 4-0 on Sunday afternoon inside the ECU Indoor Tennis Center. Â
"We came out with a lot of energy in doubles and it really helped set the tone for the match," said assistant coach Ian Van Cott. "We are competing well right now and are close to firing on all cylinders. We look forward to getting on the road this week for the next opportunity."
The Pirates got dominant efforts from their top two doubles pairs. On court two, Austin Allen and Diogo Marques did not drop a single game, beating Alex Brea and Alex Pavkovich 6-0. Wisse Jonker and Ronny Georgi clinched the point for ECU when they beat Zion Heaven and Afonso Viana 6-4 on court one.
ECU's top players continued to lead in singles play. Jonker, who has an ECU-best 13-6 record this season and is 7-1 in dual matches, dropped just one game on the way to a 6-0, 6-1 win over Pavkovich.
Vlad Anghel won his 10th match of the season by topping Viana 6-3, 6-1.
The match came to a close with an exciting three-set match on court one. Milo Bargeron looked well on his way to a victory when he took the first set 6-1 against Marques. But the ECU freshman composed himself quickly and won the second set 6-3 to force the decider. There, Marques gave Bargeron little hope, as Marques ran away with a 1-6, 6-3, 6-1 win for his team-high 15th win of the season.
ECU improves to 7-1 on the year while Appalachian State falls to 1-5.
The Pirates will hit the road next weekend for a trio of matches. First up is a match with conference rival Connecticut on Friday, Feb. 8.
