Pirates Finish 14th At Puerto Rico Classic
February 19, 2019 | Men's Golf
RIO GRANDE, Puerto Rico -Â The ECU men's golf team finished its second tournament of the 2019 spring season in 14th place at the Puerto Rico Tuesday afternoon. The Pirates carded rounds of 294-296-293 for a three-round total of 883.
Georgia and Georgia Tech shared the team title at 16-under-par 848. The Yellow Jackets were in first-place after two rounds and maintained the position with a 3-under-par during the final round. The Bulldogs jumped over NC State to finish tied for first-place with a third total of 8-under-par 280.
Junior Patrick Stephenson posted the Pirates' lowest-score of the tournament at 2-over-par 218 (74-73-71) with fellow classmate Blake Taylor finishing one stroke behind his teammate at 3-over-par 219 (73-74-72). Stephenson led the 75-player field with 42 pars.
"We got off to the start we needed today and got to 5-under-par but then we started hitting it in the river and making big numbers," ECU Head Coach Andrew Sapp said. "We had done so well at avoiding double bogies in the first two rounds, but couldn't do that on our last nine holes. Patrick played well today and was the only one to avoid a double [bogey] all week."
Tim Bunten carded a 7-over-par 223 (72-75-76), A.J. Beechler fired an 11-over-par 227 (75-78-74) and Chris Akers shot 13-over-par 229 (78-74-77).
The Pirates will return to action March 4-5 as they host the ECU Intercollegiate at Brook Valley.
