Pirates Come Back To Win ECU Intercollegiate
March 05, 2019 | Men's Golf
GREENVILLE, N.C. --- The Pirates men's golf team rallied from a 10th-place standing and 18-stroke deficit after one round at the ECU Intercollegiate to claim the 54-hole tournament's title Tuesday at the Brook Valley Country Club.
The Pirates opened play Monday with a first round 301 that left them trailing leader Western Kentucky by 18 strokes, but climbed back to fourth-place by the end of the round two. ECU then fired a third round-best 290 to edge Campbell by two strokes.
The Pirates posted a final score of 16-over-par 880 (301-281-290) to earn their first win of the season and second consecutive ECU Intercollegiate title.
"I couldn't be more proud of a team to come back from the bottom of the leaderboard in round one to win," ECU Head Coach Andrew Sapp said. "It is just a confidence booster for these men to know that they can fight and come back in tough circumstances."
ECU junior Patrick Stephenson finished runner-up with a 4-under-par 212, including a 5-under-par 67 (75-70-67) Tuesday. Freshman A.J. Beechler also carded a 5-under-par 67 Monday in round two to help vault the Pirates back into contention.
"The 67 from AJ yesterday afternoon and the 67 from Patrick today were some incredible rounds at Brook Valley in the cold conditions the weather gave us," Sapp said. "We are excited to take this momentum heading to Myrtle Beach next week."
Beechler (80-67-74) finished tied for seventh at 5-over-par 221 along with ECU junior Blake Taylor (76-72-73). Sophomore Tim Bunten (79-72-76) and junior Logan Shuping (77-77-73), who was playing as an individual, tied for 24th at 11-over-par 227.
ECU returns to action March 11-12 at the General Hackler Championships at the Dunes Club in Myrtle Beach, S.C.
