Beechler Leads ECU To Seventh-Place Finish At General Hackler Championship

MYRTLE BEACH, S.C. – ECU men's golf team finished in seventh-place with a 54-hole total of 9-over-par 873 at the General Hackler Championship at the Dunes Golf and Beach Club. The Pirates shot 1-over-par 289 in Tuesday's final round to move up three spots in the final standings.
"We played a great final round today which helped us move up three spots and get some high quality wins including one over Texas A&M," ECU Head Coach Andrew Sapp. "I am proud of how our guys competed today. It is always good to move up the leaderboard in the final round."
Five of the six teams that finished ahead of ECU are ranked in the Golf Stat top 30. Eighteenth-ranked North Florida (-21) won the team title followed by No. 6 Wake Forest (-16), No. 25 Liberty (-15), No. 29 Louisville (-11), No. 17 Georgia (-10) and Kentucky (-6). The Pirates were one stroke better than No. 23 Texas A&M (+10).
Freshman A.J. Beechler had the Pirates' best final round with a 6-under 66, which also gave him the team's best individual finish in a time for seventh-place at 5-under-par 211 (71-74-66). Beechler moved up 27 spots in the final round.
"A.J. played incredible today with a bogey free 66 to lead the way for us and notch another top 10 individual finish," Sapp said.
Sophomore Tim Bunten fired a three round total of 54-hole of 1-over-par 217 (69-72-76) to tie for 22nd. Junior Patrick Stephenson carded a 3-over-par 219 (72-73-74) to finish tied for 29th. Blake Taylor shot a 15-over-par 231 (77-76-78) and Chris Akers recorded a 17-over 233Â (79-81-73).
ECU returns to the links April 6-7 at the Irish Creek Intercollegiate in Kannapolis.
