Pirates Finish Seventh At Irish Creek Intercollegiate
April 07, 2019 | Men's Golf
KANNAPOLIS, N.C. --- ECU men's golf finished in seventh-place with a 54-hole total of 2-under-par 850 (284-277-289) at the Irish Creek Intercollegiate, which was played at the Club at Irish Creek. The Pirates shot 5-over-par 289 in Sunday's final round, finishing just two shots outside the top-five after starting the day in third-place.
"Early in the round we were tied for the lead after getting off to a good start," ECU Head Coach Andrew Sapp said. "Being in the final wave of top teams for the last round was definitely an experience this young team needed and hopefully the next time we are in that situation we will capitalize on it more. We just couldn't make the birdies down the stretch on the back nine after getting off to a really good start."
UNCG won the team tournament title with a 54-hole score of 18-under-par 834 (280-277-277), finishing eight strokes ahead of second-place Ohio State (279-288-275=843). Kansas (-9), Florida State (-4) and Davidson (-3) round out the Top-5.
Junior Blake Taylor had the Pirates' finish best, tying for 14th at 2-under par 211 (71-68-72). Fellow classmate Patrick Stephenson finished one stroke behind his teammate, tied for 20th at 1-under-par 212 (70-69-73). Tim Bunten carded a 2-over 215 (70-72-73), Stephen Carroll shot a 3-over 216 (73-72-71) and A.J. Beechler fired a 4-over 217 (75-68-74).
Freshman Jimbo Stanley finished at 13-over-par 226 (77-75-74) and Attie Giles fired a 17-over 230 (75-79-76).
