Anghel Named AAC Player Of The Week
February 19, 2019 | Men's Tennis
GREENVILLE, N.C. – After an undefeated weekend, Vlad Anghel of the ECU men's tennis team was named AAC Men's Tennis Player of the Week, as announced by the conference on Tuesday afternoon.
Â
"What a nice honor for Vlad and well-deserved," said head coach Shawn Heinchon. "He had a rough start to the spring due to some lingering injuries and has been working extremely hard to get back up and running to full speed. The last couple of weeks, we really have been benefiting from his leadership, which seems to also have translated into some very solid play."
Â
Anghel helped lead ECU to a 3-0 record on its most recent road trip, including a 4-0 win over American conference foe UConn. The senior from Bucharest, Romania won all three of his singles matches on court two and did not drop a single set. Anghel opened with a 6-3, 6-1 win over UConn's Yili Zheng, added a 6-4, 6-4 win over Boston University's Pete Siozios and finished the weekend by beating Bryant's Micheal Plutt 6-3, 6-4.
Â
In doubles, Anghel teamed with Simon Labbe for the first time when the pair took on UConn, but the inexperience did not matter as the Pirate duo rolled to a 3-0 weekend. The pairing won all three matches on court three, with the victories helping clinch the doubles point for ECU against UConn and Boston University.
Â
The Pirates will be back on the road this weekend, looking to extend their best start in six seasons. ECU will take on Stetson on Saturday, Feb. 23 followed by Georgia Southern on Sunday, Feb. 24. Both matches will take place in Statesboro, Ga.
