GREENVILLE, N.C. – Seniors Austin Allen of the men's tennis program and Ashley Weingartz of the softball team have been selected recipients of the prestigious East Carolina University Robert H. Wright Alumni Leadership Award, according to an announcement by Director for Scholarship and Signature Programs Shawn Moore Tuesday.
Â
The award is designed to recognize excellence in academic achievement at ECU, service to the university and community, and strong leadership qualities.
Â
Allen, who served as president of the Student-Athlete Advisory Committee during the 2017-18 academic year, has helped the men's tennis squad to a 10-1 start this season - the Pirates' best start to a campaign since 2012-13. He owns a 5-3 singles record and is a perfect 3-0 in dual matches. Allen also sports a 6-3 doubles record with freshman Diogo Marques. The tandem is 4-3 during doubles matches, including a win on court one against Boston University.
Â
Weingartz, who was selected to attend the NCAA Career in Sports Forum last summer, has been a key factor in the softball program's 8-1 start to the 2019 season – the finest beginning to a campaign since the 2006 team began with eight-straight victories. She is second on the team in hits (11) and third in batting average (.423). Additionally, Weingartz boasts a perfect 1.000 fielding percentage having committed no errors in 21 defensive chances.
Â
Allen and Weingartz will be honored at the University's commencement ceremonies in May.
