
ECU In Second After Day Two At The American Championships

INDIANAPOLIS, Ind. – The ECU men's swimming and diving team is in second-place after two days of competition at the 2019 American Athletic Conference Championships with 280 total points, sitting 25 points behind first-place Cincinnati with 315 points.
Nine individuals collected all-conference honors for the Pirates led by the foursome of Gavin Erdmann, Eric Hinderup, Gustavo Santos and Victor Dos Santos with a first-place finish in the 200-yard medley relay.
The unit captured the Pirates' second consecutive event championship with an ECU record time of 1:19.27, edging second-place UConn by 1.8 seconds.
"We had a good night at the finals," ECU Head Coach Matthew Jabs said. "Our men's relay team was lights out and our divers were awesome. We've got a lot of momentum heading into tomorrow."
Freshman Luke Stivers (288.20) and sophomore Devin Nugent (281.65) placed second and third in the 1-meter springboard competition with SMU's Parker Hardigree claiming the gold medal.
Santos fell seven-tenths of a second shy of capturing the gold medal in the 50-yard freestyle. Cincinnati's William Kearsey reached the finish line in a time of 19.78, while Santos completed the race in an ECU record time of 19.85. Erdmann took third-place with a time of 20.02 while Hinderup placed fourth, but posted an ECU freshman record time of 20.07.
Freshman Marek Osina claimed the silver medal in the 200-yard IM with a time of 1:45.96 to set an ECU rookie record, finishing just 0.53 seconds behind event-winner Domonic Polling of Cincinnati (1:45.43).
The ECU women's team remains in sixth-place with 119 points.
"Our young ladies really stepped up today and are gaining a lot of valuable experience," Jabs said.
Freshman Marianna Vignoli set the ECU freshman record in the 500-yard freestyle with a time of 4:52.59 during the preliminaries and finished eighth during the championship.
Junior Catherine Johnson missed a spot on the podium by two-tenths of a second in 50-yard freestyle, finishing with fourth-place with a time of 22.91.
The title meet continues tomorrow with prelims starting at 10 a.m. ET and finals beginning at 6 p.m. ET.
