Pirates Remain In Second Through Three Days At The American Championships

INDIANAPOLIS, Ind. --- The ECU men's swimming and diving team won six of seven events Friday night at the 2019 American Athletic Conference Championship to remain in second-place after three days of competition.
ECU trails first-place Cincinnati by 94 points heading into the final day of competition. The Bearcats have 649 points followed by ECU with 649 followed by UConn (444) in third-place with SMU (407) in fourth.
"It was an amazing night of swimming," ECU Head Coach Matthew Jabs said. "We had some really outstanding performances, not from just our champions, but all throughout both rosters. It's been a very positive week and we look to finishing strong tomorrow."
Freshman Marek Osina won his first American individual medal by capturing gold in the 400 IM with a championship and ECU freshman record time of 3:48.15, reaching the wall by more than four seconds ahead of runner-up Blake Hanna of Cincinnati.
Junior Gustavo Santos claimed his third consecutive conference title in the 100-yard butterfly with a meet record time of 46.01, breaking his own record by 0.81 seconds. Santos posted a NCAA B qualifying time with his swim, missing a NCAA A cut by just 0.77 seconds after setting the ECU record during the preliminaries earlier in the day.
Junior Blaz Demsar earned all-conference honors in the 200-yard freestyle by finishing in second-place with a time of 1:36.30. Cincinnati's Din Selmanovic won the event by 0.44 seconds with a time of 1:35.86.
Sophomore Jacek Arentewicz repeated as conference champion in the 100-yard breaststroke with a meet record time of 52.64, besting the previous record set in the inaugural championship meet in 2014 by 0.10 seconds.
Freshman Lyubomir Epitropov finished third in the 100-yard breaststroke with a NCAA B qualifying time of 53.57.
In his final meet, senior Tristan Taylor edged two-time defending champion William Kearsey of UConn by 0.24 seconds to win the gold medal in the 100-yard backstroke with an NCAA B qualifying time of 47.77.
Taylor, Arentewicz, Santos and Victor Dos Santos teamed to win the 400-yard medley relay, the Pirates' second relay victory of the championship. The foursome established an ECU and American championship record with a time of 3:10.55.
The ECU ladies remain in sixth-place with 213 points. Karen Wasserman (100 breaststroke) and Kat Morrison (100 backstroke) each set an ECU freshman record Friday.
Houston leads the field with 624 points.
Saturday's prelims begin at 10 a.m. ET with finals starting at 5 p.m. ET.Â
