Pirates Fall At No. 5 UConn

HARTFORD, CONN. ā The ECU women's basketball team could not keep up with No. 5 UConn on Wednesday night, falling 118-55 at the XL Center.
ECU (11-11, 2-7 AAC) saw Raven Johnson and Lashonda Monk finish in double figures in scoring, as Johnson scored 14 while Monk had 12. Destiny Campbell had a team-high six rebounds while Monk and Alex Frazier both had three assists. The Pirates shot 23-of-68 (.338) from the floor and 5-of-9 (.556) from the free throw line.
UConn (20-2, 9-0 AAC) was led by Katie Lou Samuelson and Napheesa Collier. Samuelson finished with 31 points and nine rebounds while Collier shot a perfect 10-for-10 from the floor and had 21 points. Crystal Dangerfield collected a double-double for the Huskies, scoring 12 points and handing out 12 assists.
The Pirates struck first, as Monk streaked in for a layup off the opening tip. After a 7-0 UConn run, ECU closed back within three on a jumper by Johnson. After that though, the Huskies went on a 34-6 run to finish the quarter. As a team, UConn shot 16-of-24 (.667) from the floor in the frame while ECU hit 6-of-20 (.300) shots.
The woes continued for ECU in the second quarter. UConn shot even better in the second, finishing 11-of-16 (.688) from the floor. Johnson was the lone Pirate to have much success offensively in the first half, as the junior had nine points on 4-of-8 shooting at the break. UConn led 70-25 halfway through, ECU's largest halftime deficit of the season.
ECU had its best quarter of the game in the third. The Pirates scored 20 points in the frame, led by Monk's seven. The sophomore guard hit her only three-point attempt of the quarter and added a jumper and a pair of free throws. Johnson scored five more points to bring her total to 14. Unfortunately for the Pirates, the Huskies continued their blistering shooting and scored 28 points of their own.
With the result all but decided, neither team shot the ball well in the fourth quarter. Campbell scored four points and hauled in six rebounds to pace ECU.
UConn dominated in the paint, outscoring ECU 62-24 in the lane as well as outscoring the Pirates 34-0 in points off turnovers. ECU was outrebounded 45-37, although the
Pirates held a 17-16 advantage in offensive rebounds.
The Pirates return home this weekend for a game against Memphis on Saturday afternoon. The game will serve as Alumni Day for ECU, as well as Girls and Women in Sports Day. Tipoff is scheduled for 1 p.m., inside Minges Coliseum.
