GREENVILLE, N.C. --- Three-time American Athletic Conference butterfly champion Gustavo Santos has been invited to compete at the 2019 NCAA Swimming and Diving Championships in 100-yard butterfly. The championships will be held March 27-30 at the Lee & Joe Jamail Texas Swimming Center in Austin, Texas. The University of Texas at Austin will serve as the host.
Â
Santos, the Pirates and American's record-holder in the 100 butterfly, clocked 45.83 seconds at the Tar Heel Last Chance Meet on March 10 to punch his ticket to the NCAA Championships. Santos swam the 100 fly in 45.86 seconds in the preliminary round of The American's championships to best his conference record set in this event a year ago. He won his third-straight American title the 100 fly after recording 46.01 seconds in the finals. Santos is seeded 29th in the NCAA Championships.
"I'm so happy for this guy," ECU Head Coach Matthew Jabs said. "We talk about nothing given and every thing earned, through ups and downs make no mistake he has earned this opportunity. I can't wait to get to Austin."
Santos also swam the second-fastest 50 freestyle in The American this season and was invited to compete in the national field in this event too. Santos was the conference's runner-up in the 50 free this season after clocking a B-Cut time of 19.85 seconds. He is seeded at No. 49 in this event.
Â
A total of 270 participants (235 swimmers and 35 divers) will compete in the championships. Swimmers qualified for the championships by meeting the established minimum time for the events in which they entered. Divers will be determined by performances achieved at the Zone Diving meets March 11-16.
Â
ESPN3 will live stream finals sessions on Wednesday through Saturday. Preliminary sessions on Thursday through Saturday will be streamed live on www.texassports.com. Additionally, ESPNU will air a two-hour show at 7 p.m. Eastern time, Monday, April 8.
