Pirates Sweep Charlotte 4-0
March 14, 2019 | Women's Tennis
GREENVILLE, N.C. – Showing little signs of rust, the ECU women's tennis team cruised to a 4-0 win over Charlotte on Thursday afternoon at the River Birch Tennis Complex.
"We're playing very, very well," said head coach Tom Morris. "Charlotte's a good program and had won seven of nine matches coming into today. I thought this was a match that could go either way and I'm very pleased with our ability to fight and battle through the lineup."
ECU (13-2) wins for the 13th straight time and racks up its seventh straight shutout. Charlotte (8-6) drops its third straight match, all on the road.
The first two doubles matches were lopsided affairs. Lisa Hofbauer and Alisa Diercksen won their eighth straight match as a pair when they beat Immie Cowper and Tai Martin 6-1 on court one. Charlotte anwered when Pierina Imparato and Sasha Lee topped Hsia Ho Chiao and Nastja Rettich by the same score on court three. That meant the doubles point came down to court two. ECU's tandem of Celia Ruiz and Minette Van Vreden trailed Rocio Safont and Emma Scott for most of the match. However, trailing 5-4 with Van Vreden serving, the Pirate duo held serve and then went on to win the break point, taking a 6-5 lead. With Ruiz serving, ECU had three chances at grabbing the match point. On the third and final try, the Pirates got the point to clinch the double point.
In singles, ECU won the first set on four of the six courts. Rettich was especially quick to take the first set, winning it 6-0 against Zoe Radojicic.
The Pirates got two more points from their top two players. Hofbauer and Ruiz both won their ninth straight match. Hofbauer topped Safont 6-2, 6-2 on court one while Ruiz beat Martin 6-3, 6-4.
After winning that first set 6-0 and leading the second set 3-0, Rettich's momentum finally slowed against Radojicic. Radojicic came back to tie the second set at 5-5. Each player held their own serve to send the set into a tiebreaker. Even the tiebreaker took longer than normal, with the players tied at 7-7. Finally, Rettich won the match point, winning 6-0, 7-6 (10-8).
The Pirates have a pair of road matches on Saturday. First up will be an 11 a.m., match at Elon followed by a 4 p.m., match at North Carolina A&T.
