Pirates Extend Winning Streak With Pair Of Victories
March 16, 2019 | Women's Tennis
GREENSBORO, N.C. – Despite playing two matches back-to-back, the ECU women's tennis team did not show a hint of fatigue, dropping just one point as the Pirates beat Elon and North Carolina A&T on Saturday afternoon. ECU beat Elon 6-1 and then beat North Carolina A&T 5-0.
ECU (15-2) has won 15 straight matches and has dropped just one point in the past nine matches. The Pirates are just two wins away from tying last season's win total, which stands as the highest win total of the 2010's, with eight matches to go in the regular season.
ECU started the day off at Elon (7-7) and although the Pirates dropped their first point in seven matches, it barely slowed them. ECU took care of business on the top two courts in doubles to clinch the point. Celia Ruiz and Minette Van Vreden were unstoppable in a 6-0 win over Uma Nayar and Nicole Shiau on court two. Lisa Hofbauer and
Alisa Diercksen combined for their ninth straight win when they beat Alex Koniaev and Maria Paraja 6-4 on the top court.
In singles, the matches were close, but ECU won the critical points. The first to finish was Ruiz on court two. It was the most lopsided match of the opening six as Ruiz won her tenth straight match by beating Paraja 6-3, 6-0.
Elon momentarily gained momentum when Archer beat Van Vreden 7-5, 6-4 on court five. But wins from Diercksen and Hofbauer within seconds of each other clinched the match for ECU. Hofbauer won a pair of 7-5 sets while Diercksen overturned a first-set deficit to win.
The first match came to an end when Hsia Ho Chiao and Martina Paladini-Jennings both won straight set matches. Each had their moments of doubt, with Paladini-Jennings winning her first set in a tiebreaker while Chiao won her second set 7-5 after being tied 5-5.
The second match was a rout from the doubles matches. Ruiz and Van Vreden again got the Pirates started, this time beating Renata Ruiz and Martina Estenssoro 6-2 on court two. Annija Veinsteina and Paladini-Jennings followed with a 6-2 victory over Brenna Bryant and Kayla Ellis on court three.
In singles, ECU rolled to four straight wins. Nastja Rettich got her first win of the day when she beat Estenssoro 6-0, 6-1 on court four. Veinsteina followed with a 6-1, 6-1 win over Ellis on court six. The match was clinched when Ruiz got her 11th straight win when she beat Angelica Martinez 6-0, 6-1. The match came to an end after Paladini-Jennings beat Ruiz 6-1, 6-0 just seconds later.
The Pirates are on the road next Friday as they travel to take on George Washington.
