March 24, 2019 | Softball
MEMPHIS, Tenn. – Backed by a six-run third inning, Memphis won the rubber game of an American Athletic Conference series over ECU 9-1 in six innings Sunday at the Tigers Softball Complex.
Â
Kendra Ziemba tallied the lone hit and run for the Pirates while Alyssa Dean led Memphis with two RBI and two hits while Delaney Smith added two hits.
Â
Karli Perque (4-5) earned the win in a complete-game effort and struck out five batters. Erin Poepping (12-8) surrendered nine runs (seven earned) on 10 hits with two walks and three strikeouts.
Â
The Pirates had a nice chance to score in the top of the first. Inae and McCollum drew one-out walks and advanced to second and third with one out. However, Wood and McClellan grounded out to third to keep ECU off of the scoreboard.
Â
In the top of the second, the Pirates tied the game with two outs. Weingartz walked and Ziemba singled before a sac bunt moved the runners up a base. After a fielder's choice force out at home, Narron swiped second base and Ziemba scored from third on the throw down to the base to knot the score at one.
Â
Memphis took control in the bottom of the third, plating six runs on five hits and an ECU error. A trio of the runs occurred with two outs thanks to a two-run single and subsequent error in the outfield that scored another to make it 7-1. The Tigers struck again in the bottom of the fifth via a Davidson RBI single to stretch their cushion to 8-1. Memphis sealed the win with another score in the bottom of the sixth.
Â
East Carolina returns home after a lengthy road swing Wednesday, taking on in-state opponent North Carolina at 5 p.m. inside the ECU Softball Stadium.
