UNCASVILLE, CONN. – After a thrilling overtime win in the first round, the ECU women's basketball will take on top seed UConn in the quarterfinals on Saturday afternoon in the Mohegan Sun Arena.
ECU (16-14) matched up with SMU for the third straight year in the first round of the American Championship and it was the Pirates who won the rubber match. The win did not come easy as SMU tied the game up with under 30 seconds remaining and then took the lead in overtime. However, layups from Lashonda Monk and Salita Greene helped overturn the deficit and see out an ECU victory. Greene finished with a double-double, scoring 10 points and pulling down 11 rebounds while Monk had 10 points of her own. Raven Johnson and Alex Frazier led ECU in scoring, adding 12 points each.
Monk was named Third-Team All-Conference after leading ECU in scoring (13.1 ppg) and leading the league in steals (115). She has already set the AAC single-season record for steals and is eight away from tying the ECU record, as well as ranking fifth in the country in steals per game. ECU has received increased production from Destiny Campbell and Greene as they try to extend their collegiate careers. In the final three games of the regular season, Campbell scored in double figures and then pulled down eight rebounds against SMU. Greene's 10 points against SMU meant the Pirates are 10-1 all-time when she reaches double-figures. During ECU's current three-game winning streak, Frazier has also been steady, averaging 13.0 points and shooting 54.5% shooting.
UConn (28-2) earned the top seed in the postseason tournament after going 16-0 during the regular season. The Huskies will miss First-Team All-Conference selection Katie Lou Samuelson through the conference tournament, but will still have AAC Player of the Year Napheesa Collier as well as AAC Newcomer of the Year Megan Walker. Collier leads the conference in both scoring (20.2 ppg) and rebounding (10.2 rpg) and was also named the league's Defensive Player of the Year. Crystal Dangerfield, the third First-Team All-Conference selection for the Huskies, leads the conference in assists (6.2 apg) and is eighth in scoring (13.7 ppg).
ECU will be playing in the AAC quarterfinals for the second straight year and for the fourth time overall. ECU is 1-2 in the round, with the lone win coming in the 2015 edition. It will also be the third time ECU has matched up with UConn in the postseason, with the Huskies winning in the 2015 semifinals and the 2016 quarterfinals. UConn has a 10-0 record in the series, including a win at home this season.
Tipoff is scheduled for 2 p.m., on Saturday afternoon. The game will be streamed on ESPN3. Fans can also listen to the radio broadcast here or follow the live stats here.
