Pirates' Season Ends With A Loss To SMU
April 18, 2019 | Men's Tennis
Orlando, Fla. – In the opening round of the AAC Championship, the No. 8 seed ECU men's tennis team fell to No. 9 seed SMU 4-0 on Thursday morning at the USTA National Campus.
Â
ECU finishes its season with a 14-7 record, the third straight season that the Pirates have finished with a winning record. SMU (12-16) advances to the AAC Championship Quarterfinals where the Mustangs will take on top-seeded UCF.
Â
All three matches were needed to decide the doubles point. SMU won the first match, as Jan-Simon Vrbsky and Tomas Vaise beat Javier Renones and Wisse Jonker 6-2 on the top court. But Simon Labbe and Austin Allen evened it up by beating Michael Smith and Andrew Buhelos 6-3 on court three. The Mustangs took the 1-0 lead by winning the third and final contest, as Carles Sarrio and Huntley Allen topped Vlad Anghel and Ronny Georgi 6-4.
Â
In singles, ECU dug itself a deeper hole when SMU won all six of the match's first sets. The Pirates did recover from two of those, with Renones and Labbe winning their respective second sets and forcing a decisive third set.
Â
But even with Labbe and Renones heading to a third set, it was not enough for the Pirates. SMU claimed the victory by completing three straight-set wins. First, Huntley Allen beat Will Bissett 7-6 (7-5), 6-1 on court five. Sarrio finished off a 6-2, 6-4 win over Anghel on court one. The clincher came when Jonker fell to Roberto Rosales 6-3, 6-3 on court three.
