ECU Moves Up Two Spots At The American Championships

PALM HARBOR, Fla. --- The ECU men's golf team moved up two places in the overall team standings Monday on day two of the 2019 American Athletic Conference Championships at the Innisbrook Resort and Golf Club.

The Pirates improved their score by six strokes, carding a 9-over-par 293 and sit alone in eighth-place heading into Tuesday's final round with a two-day score of 23-over-par 592 (299-293).

Memphis overtook SMU for the team lead by shooting 2-under-par 284 in round two, while the Mustangs fired a 5-over-par 289. The Tigers (286-282=568) lead SMU (285-289=574) by six strokes through two rounds with Temple (291-289) and UCF (291-289) tied for third-place at 12-over-par 580. Four-time champion USF is in fifth-place at 15-over-par 583 (290-293).

SMU's McClure Meissner has posted a 5-under 66 in each of the first two rounds and hold the individual lead at 10-under-par 132 with a seven stroke lead over second-place Brad Bawden of Memphis (70-69=139) at 3-under-par.

ECU junior Blake Taylor shot par-71 Monday to move up from 17th to 10th with a 36-hole score of 2-over par 144 (73-71). Taylor was 1-over-par through 17 holes, but birdied the final hole to drop back to par.

Patrick Stephenson also surged up the leaderboard, advancing 17 spots place on day two with a score of 1-over-par 72 following an opening round of 8-over-par 79. He parred his final six holes of the round after registering five pars, four bogeys and three birdies on the first 12 holes to tie for 31st along with teammates A.J. Beechler (76-75), Tim Bunten (76-75) and three other golfers at 9-over-par 151.

Beechler and Bunten each fired a second round 4-over-par 75 after shooting 5-over-par Sunday. Sophomore Stephen Carroll is one stroke behind his teammates, tied for 37th at 10-over-par 152 (74-78).

ECU will play its final round alongside UConn, beginning at 8:34 a.m. from the No. 10 tee.
