USF Claims Series Opener Over ECU, 2-0
April 05, 2019 | Softball
TAMPA, Fla. – Georgina Corrick struck out 10 batters and posted a complete-game shutout to lift USF over East Carolina 2-0 in the opener of an American Athletic Conference series Friday evening at the USF Softball Stadium.
Â
Corrick improved to 15-2 in the victory and scattered three hits while walking two batters. Erin Poepping (12-12) surrendered just two runs in her 15th complete game of the season, walking three and striking out one.
Â
Tyler King, Rachel McCollum and Ashley Weingartz notched a hit apiece to lead the ECU offense while Bethany Keen and Brooke Hartman tallied a hit and a RBI each for the Bulls.
Â
USF threatened right away in the bottom of the first when AnaMarie Bruni was hit by a pitch and moved to third on a stolen base and sac bunt. However, after a walk put runners on the corners, a sharp liner to short and a fly out to left terminated the inning. ECU put up the first hit of the game on a Inae bunt single with two away in the top of the third, but a strikeout ended the frame.
Â
The Bulls broke through in the bottom of the third with two outs on a Keen RBI single that scored Bruni who led off with a walk before scoring from second on the single to right field. USF added another two-out run on a RBI single off the bat of Hartman before Courtney Layton nailed a Bull runner at the plate to prevent further damage.
Â
Poepping settled in during the fifth and sixth innings, retiring the Bulls in order to give the Pirates a chance in the top of the seventh. ECU couldn't muster any offense though as Corrick sealed the shutout with a perfect inning.
Â
The teams will reconvene for game two of the series Saturday at 5:30 p.m.
