Pirates Earn ITA Community Service Award
May 20, 2019 | Women's Tennis
GREENVILLE, N.C. – After one of the best seasons in program history on the court, the ECU women's tennis team was also honored for its efforts off the court as the Pirates were awarded the Intercollegiate Tennis Association (ITA) Community Service Award for the Carolina Region.
Â
"It's a tribute to all the hard work this team has put together this year," said head coach Tom Morris. "They've done well in a lot of different directions, including on the court, they have a great GPA as well as working in the community. I'm very proud of the effort from the whole team."
Â
It is the third straight year that the Pirates have won the ITA's regional community service award. The Pirates also won the national community service award in 2017, the last time that the ITA gave out the national award.
Â
During the 2018-19 school year, the Pirates performed 444 hours of community service. The ten members of the team worked with a variety of organizations, including the Humane Society of Eastern Carolina, Aces for Autism, Rise Against Hunger, Pitt County Schools and more. Â
Â
ECU finished the season with a 22-3 record, marking the first time in program history that the Pirates had won at least 20 matches. The 22 wins all came in one winning streak which was the longest streak in the team's history. During that streak, the ITA ranked ECU No. 49 in the country, the highest ranking that ECU has ever earned. The Pirates will try to build on its success in the 2019-20 season as seven players are returning while two talented newcomers join the squad.
