GREENVILLE, N.C. – For the second time in three years, ECU has been named one of three finalists for the National Association of Collegiate Directors of Athletics (NACDA) Community Service Award presented by the Fiesta Bowl according to an announcement made at the 54th Annual NACDA Convention in Orlando today.
Â
The Pirates were also a finalist for the inaugural award given in 2017.
Â
The award recognizes NACDA member institutions in Division I and honors exceptional athletics departments that make volunteerism and community service a way of life. A five-person committee consisting of athletics directors across the country and representatives from the Fiesta Bowl and NACDA will help choose this year's award winner.
Â
The winning institution, to be announced June 24, will receive a trophy for permanent display and $10,000 for its chosen charity. The two runners-up will be awarded a trophy and $5,000 each for their respective chosen charities.
Â
"On behalf of East Carolina University and our athletics department, we are extremely thankful to NACDA and the Fiesta Bowl for recognizing us as a finalist for the 2019 Community Service Award," ECU Director of Athletics Jon Gilbert said. "We appreciate all our student-athletes who stepped up and helped all North Carolinians with the aftermath of Hurricane Florence last year. Our student-athletes played an important role in the rebuild and recovery of our great state, another great example of what it means to be a Pirate."
Â
Boston College and the University of Texas at Arlington were also named finalists for the award.
Â
In September 2018, eastern North Carolina was devastated by Hurricane Florence, which caused an estimated $54 billion worth of damage to the region and ECU student-athletes and staff were among the first to aid in the recovery efforts. Â They participated in complete home demolitions, collected and distributed food, clothes and supplies, volunteered at the Red Cross distribution center, the Humane Society of Eastern Carolina as well as at ECU's Hurricane Relief Effort Center.
Â
More than 230 student-athletes completed over 1,400 hours of community service time in restoration efforts from Sept. 18 – Oct. 9.
