June 27, 2019 | Women's Tennis
Greenville, N.C. – Coming off the best season in program history, the ECU women's tennis program has added talented transfer Michelle Ncube as the Pirates try to continue the momentum in the 2019-20 season.
Â
"We are super excited to welcome Michelle to our Pirate family," said head coach Tom Morris. "We generally have not recruited transfers, but in the case of Michelle Ncube, we welcomed the opportunity! Michelle is a great example of the type of student athlete that we strive to have in our program. She is a great student and on the court, she was named Conference Freshman of the Year and MVP this past year. She had a 11-3 record at No. 1 singles and had wins over ACC players in fall tournaments. We feel that Michelle will make an immediate impact in our line up in both singles and doubles and will contribute to our goal of continuing our improvement in our Regional and National ranking. We look forward to having Michelle as a part of our program!"
Â
Ncube comes to Greenville after starting her collegiate career at Bethune-Cookman. The Harare, Zimbabwe native was the 2019 MEAC Rookie of the Year and was named to the MEAC All-Conference First-Team during her rookie campaign. Ncube spent the entire season on the top singles court and went 11-3 overall and 5-0 in the MEAC, finishing her season with a win in the MEAC Tournament. Ncube also had success on the doubles court, going 11-6. Her outstanding play earned her the team's MVP award.Â
Â
Ncube had a strong showing during the fall season at Bethune-Cookman as well. She won her singles flight title at the HBCU National Championships, the first for Bethune-Cookman since the 2014 season. Ncube followed that up with beating Miami's Ana Madcur at the Bedford Cup. It was the first win by a Wildcat over an ACC opponent since that same 2014 season.
Â
ECU is coming off a season that saw the Pirates finish with a 22-3 record, marking the first time in program history that the Pirates had won at least 20 matches. The 22 wins all came in one winning streak which was the longest streak in the team's history. During that streak, the ITA ranked ECU No. 49 in the country, the highest ranking that ECU has ever earned.
