GREENVILLE, N.C. – After weather forced the cancellation of the season opener, the ECU soccer team will try to get its first win of the season as the Pirates host Richmond on Sunday night inside Johnson Stadium.

The Pirates were scheduled to open their season on Thursday night against George Mason, but inclement weather forced the game to be canceled after 45 minutes of game action. In the first half though, the Pirates were consistently on the front foot, taking eight shots to two for George Mason and holding 69% of the possession. The breakthrough finally came in the final minute of the half when Grace Doran looped in a shot off a corner kick from Daria Draovitch.

Like ECU, Richmond's season opener was cancelled due to weather after one half of play. The Spiders were due to take on Longwood on Thursday afternoon and were trailing 2-1 at halftime before the weather prevented the second half from taking place. Richmond will be trying to improve on a 2018 season that saw the Spiders finish with a 2-15-1 record and just 11 goals scored. Brooke Beam is the top returning scorer for Richmond, having scored two goals to go with two assists last season.

It will be just the second ever meeting between Richmond and ECU, with the first coming last season. The Pirates travled to Richmond and left with a 3-0 win thanks to goals from Jenna Dages, Courtney Cash and Marianna Shurina. Dages also had an assist while Grace Doran and Jayda Hylton-Pelaia also added helpers. Dages' goal was one of her team-leading three game-winning goals during the 2018 campaign.
