ANNAPOLIS, Md. – The East Carolina cross country program continued its solid start to the 2019 season as the women won the team title at the Navy Invitational Saturday at the Naval Academy Golf Course.
Â
"We took another step up the ladder today with both our men and women, head coach Josey Weaver said. "I thought our women did a good job of racing in a pack, and were able to help pull and push each other throughout the race. Our men got to experience and race against a very good Navy team. This will help us come time for conference and regionals. This was a very tough course that challenged us not only physically, but also mentally. I am proud of how our team battled the entire race and never threw in the towel. We're in a good spot for this time of the year, however there's still much work ahead for both groups as we prepare for Paul Short."
Â
The Pirates fell just one point shy of a perfect score, finishing with 16. The Midshipmen were second with 43 points while UMBC took third (82) and Millersville fourth (120). ECU turned in the four fastest individual times with senior Nuria Tillo-Prats winning the 6K in a time of 22:21.10. Freshman Laura Green was second (22:38.44) followed by sophomore Abby Yourkavitch (22:44.69) and freshman Jenna Strange (22:55.60).
Â
On the men's side, Navy won the team race with 16 points with East Carolina taking second (51). UMBC (71) was third and McDaniel fourth (108).
Â
Junior Josh Spare was the top Pirate finisher as he crossed the line in an 8K time of 25:30.78. Freshman Chase Osborne came in seventh (25:46.77) and sophomore Ethan Hageman was eighth (25:48.63) to round out ECU's top-10 performers.
Â
The Pirates return to action Oct. 5 when they head to Lehigh University for the Paul Short Run.
