Burgess Gets First Win In Sweep Of UNCW
March 06, 2020 | Women's Tennis
WILMINGTON, N.C. – A close win in the doubles point helped propel the ECU women's tennis team to a 4-0 win over UNCW on Friday afternoon.
"The doubles point proved absolutely critical today," said interim head coach Kirstin Burgess. "The wind made things really hard and we came from behind a few times to get the momentum heading into singles."
ECU wins its third straight match to improve to 6-6 while UNCW drops to 3-6. It is the first win in charge of the Pirates for Burgess who took over for retired head coach Tom Morris on March 1.
The Pirates had to fight both the Seahawks and the wind to earn the doubles point. It started badly when Brinley Bell and Anna Daniels beat Nastja Rettich and Ho Chiao Hsia (ECU) 6-3. But the Pirates evened it up when Michelle Ncube and Hanna Axelsson, playing their first doubles match as a tandem, beat Sarah Horn and Sarah Merrill 7-5 on court three.
The opening point was decided on court one in a tiebreaker. ECU finally claimed it when Lisa Hofbauer and Sibel Tanik topped Rachel Marthinsen and Celeste Matute 7-6.
The momentum from the ending of doubles play carried over into singles as ECU won all six opening sets. The first Pirate to complete her match was Ncube, who finished out a 6-2, 6-4 win over Bell on court four.
ECU got a third point when Ncube's new doubles partner, Axelsson, beat Lea Dubois-Rebiere 6-3, 6-1 on court six.
The match was clinched again on court one. Hofbauer won her fifth straight match by beating Matute 6-0, 6-4, clinching the match for ECU.
The Pirates will play their second consecutive road match of the weekend when they take on Coastal Carolina at 11 a.m., on Saturday morning.
