
ECU Hits The Road For AAC Contest At Tulsa

GREENVILLE, N.C. – East Carolina will play its first road game since Jan. 2 Wednesday night when it faces off against Tulsa in an American Athletic Conference contest inside the Reynolds Center.

ESPN+ will stream the game live with Chad McKee and JR Rollo handling the broadcast. Tipoff is scheduled for 7 p.m.

The Pirates (5-7, 3-4 AAC) have dropped their last four, most recently falling to Houston 66-56 at home Jan. 16. Taniyah Thompson posted a team-high 15 points while Maddie Moore notched her first career double-double with 13 points and 10 rebounds. Lashonda Monk added 10 points, three assists and four steals. Britney Onyeje and Tatyana Hill led the Cougars with 15 points apiece.

East Carolina out-shot Houston (42.6-40 percent), but the Cougars nailed eight three-point field goals and got the better of things on the glass by a 38-33 margin. The Pirates forced the visitors into 23 turnovers and pocketed 12 steals as a result.

ECU boasts three double-digit scorers on average in Monk (14.8), Thompson (11.9) and Sierra DaCosta (11.4) while Tiara Chambers paces the squad in rebounding average (6.0) and blocked shots (16). As a team, ECU is putting up 58.6 points, 33.2 rebounds, 10.6 assists, 11.4 steals and 2.7 blocks per game as well as shooting the ball at a 36.3-percent clip from the field.

The Pirates are 3-3 away from Williams Arena at Minges Coliseum this season, picking up wins over Virginia, SMU and Cincinnati.

ECU ranks first in the American Conference in steals per game and second in turnover margin while slotting sixth nationally in total steals (137) and 17th in steals per game. Individually, Monk and Chambers lead the AAC in steals per game (3.2) and blocked shots per game (1.6). Monk is also 15th and 16th in the nation in total steals (32) and steals per game.

Scouting Tulsa
Tulsa sits one game behind East Carolina in the AAC standings, entering the day with a 3-5 overall record and 2-5 league mark. The Golden Hurricane have defeated Cincinnati and Memphis but have lost to UCF, Temple, USF, Houston and Tulane. Sisters Maya and Wyvette Mayberry lead the squad in scoring average at 14.1 and 12.4 point per game respectively while Desiree Lewis is tops in rebounding average (4.6). As a team, Tulsa is producing 54.4 points, 31.6 rebounds, 10.8 assists, 10.3 steals and 2.0 blocks per game while shooting the ball at 33.1 percent from the floor. The Golden Hurricane lead the American Conference in turnover margin (+5.9) and are second in steals per game. Matilda Mossman is in her 10th season as head coach at Tulsa.

East Carolina and Tulsa have played 24 times on the hardwood with each school winning 12 of the encounters. The Pirates have taken four of the last six meetings, including a 59-42 victory in the squads' most recent encounter during the 2019-20 campaign. ECU is 4-6 against Tulsa at the Reynolds Center.
