
Pirates Begin Outdoor Season At South Carolina

GREENVILLE, N.C. – East Carolina kicks off its outdoor season this weekend with full complement of athletes competing at the Weems Baskin on the campus of the University of South Carolina. The meet is scheduled for March 26-27 at the Sheila and Morris Creggar Track.

There will be no general fan admission for the Weems Baskin on Friday or Saturday. The meet begins on Friday at 10 a.m. with the field events and track events begin at 4 p.m. On Saturday the action starts at 10 a.m. in the field and 11 a.m. on the track.

The Pirates will face a large field of teams in Columbia, including Appalachian State, Benedict, Campbell, Charleston Southern, Claflin, Coastal Carolina, Coppin State, Emmanuel College, Furman, Georgia State, Kennesaw State, Lenoir-Rhyne University, Limestone College, North Carolina A&T, North Greenville University, Presbyterian College, Savannah State, South Carolina State, Southern Wesleyan, The Citadel, Kentucky, Charlotte, Northern Colorado, Virginia Tech and Voorhees College.

"It's been a long time since we have been able to compete," Director of Men's and Women's Track and Field and Cross Country Curt Kraft said. "The student-athletes are extremely excited to get out there. To be honest with you, we really don't know what to expect because we've been off for so long. I can tell you this - the entire team has been working extremely hard to get to this point."

ECU returns four 2019 NCAA East Preliminary qualifiers in Alyssa Sandy (100m hurdles), Sommer Knight (pole vault), Brooke Stith (triple jump) and Mackenzie Whitaker (long jump). The Pirates also look to improve their standing at the American Athletic Conference Outdoor Championships where the women finished eighth and the men in ninth.

"We are approaching this weekend with good attitudes and hopefully that shows in the results," Kraft added. "I am a coach that is all about effort. As long as I see the effort there, the results will take care of themselves."
