ECU Set To Host Bill Carson Invitational
April 01, 2021 | Track & Field
GREENVILLE, N.C. – East Carolina welcomes UNCW to Minges Family Field at the Bate Foundation Track & Field Facility April 3 for the Seventh Annual Bill Carson Invitational.
Â
The meet begins at 7:30 a.m. with the 5,000-meter and 10,000-meter races while the bulk of the field events start at 10 a.m. before the track schedule kicks off at 1:30 p.m.
Â
The ECU women have won the meet four consecutive years while the men have captured the team title in three of the last four iterations.
Â
"Both teams are extremely excited about being able to compete at home," Director of Men's and Women's Track and Field and Cross Country Curt Kraft said. "I know these are some unusual circumstances that we are in, but at least we are going to be able to compete here with a limited number of spectators."
Â
The Pirates enjoyed a successful opening to their outdoor campaign at the Weems Baskin last weekend, setting two school records and turning in an impressive 39 top-eight finishes in a huge field that included powerhouse programs Kentucky, South Carolina and Virginia Tech as well as regional rivals Appalachian State, Charlotte, Coastal Carolina and North Carolina A&T.
Â
2020 All-America selection Ryan Davis put in a huge weekend, setting the program outdoor record in the hammer throw with a mark of 68.99 meters, and the discus with a mark of 56.73 meters. He currently ranks first in the American Athletic Conference and fifth nationally in the hammer. Davis also took second place in the shot put on the way to American Athletic Conference Male Field Athlete of the Week honors.
Â
Newcomer Starrett Vesper won the open section of the pole vault, recording a mark of 4.60 meters – the eighth-best total in school history. Rebekah Bergquist also captured the open section of the javelin, posting the 10th-best mark in program history at 41.70 meters.
Â
"We are very happy that UNCW agreed to come up and compete against us on Saturday," Kraft added. "The goal for the weekend is to continue to get better and see improvements across the board with all of our marks. As always, we are here to defend our home track. Both teams know that the goal is to win the meet on both sides."
Â
Up Next: East Carolina returns to competition April 10 at the Gamecock Invitational in Columbia, S.C.
