ECU Preps For AAC Outdoor Championships
May 13, 2021 | Track & Field
GREENVILLE, N.C. – East Carolina heads to Tampa this weekend for the American Athletic Conference Outdoor Championships, hosted by the University of South Florida at the USF Track & Field Stadium.
Â
Men's and women's events will take place concurrently throughout the weekend (May 14-16) in separate team competitions. The meet will air live on ESPN+.
Â
"We are extremely excited to be at this point in our season," Director of Track and Field and Cross Country Curt Kraft said. "To think back a year ago, knowing that we didn't have a conference championship, was very disappointing to all the student athletes. Both teams are very fired up to compete their hearts out."
Â
The event was cancelled in 2020 due to the emerging COVID-19 pandemic. In 2019, the Pirate women finished in eighth place and the men took ninth. Houston has won the men's team title four years running while host Wichita State bested the field on the women's side to enter this year's iteration as the defending champion.
Â
While ECU does not feature a defending conference champion in any event, a couple of Pirate athletes have a chance to step atop the podium based on their current placements on the league's performance list. Sommer Knight leads the conference in the pole vault with a mark of 4.18 meters while Ryan Davis checks in second in both the hammer (69.51m) and discus (56.95). Niejel Wilkins is also second in the triple jump (15.48m).
Â
It's hard to predict results or guarantee any sort of outcome based on our season to this point," Kraft added. "What I do know is that this league is very good with a lot of competitive squads. I feel like our teams have a good mindset and are excited to get some positive results this weekend. I have explained to them that they need to go into this meet with a lot of fight and energy. We can only control what we can control. I believe in this coaching staff and these kids."
