No. 11 ECU Falls To UCF, 2-1

CLEARWATER, Fla. – Andrew Freeland drove in a pair of runs and Hunter Patteson tossed six shutout innings as UCF defeated No. 11 and top seed East Carolina Saturday in an elimination game of the 2021 American Athletic Conference Championship at BayCare Ballpark.

With the win, UCF (31-29) advanced to the championship game and will take on the winner of the Tulane-USF contest on Sunday, May 30 at 12 noon. The Pirates fall to 41-15 on the season and were eliminated from the conference championship.

Freeland delivered the two runs for the Knights, hitting a solo home run in the second and an RBI single in the ninth inning that scored Pablo Ruiz.

The Pirates cut the lead to one in the ninth when Alec Makarewicz drove home Lane Hoover on a single up the middle with one out, but UCF closer David Litchfield then induced a game-ending double play.

Patteson (3-2) pitched six shutout innings for the win with five strikeouts. He only allowed one Pirate baserunner to reach second base. Litchfield earned his eighth save with three innings and one run allowed to conclude the game. Jake Kuchmaner (2-4) took the loss, allowing a run in two innings.

The Pirates will have to wait until Monday, May 31 to find out their NCAA regional opponents.
