Pirates To Run At Virginia Invitational

GREENVILLE, N.C. – The East Carolina cross country teams will attempt to build on a strong start to the season Friday evening at the Virginia Invitational in Earlysville, Va.

The women's 5K is scheduled for 5:15 p.m. The men's 8K commences approximately 45 minutes later.

"This will be a good test for us racing against quite a few regionally ranked teams," head coach Josey Weaver said. "We're hoping to learn more about ourselves and walk away from this competition better prepared for our championships in October and November."

The Pirate men, currently ranked No. 14 in the USTFCCCA Southeast Region, took second place at the Elon Opener two weeks ago – finishing behind nationally-ranked Duke. Austin Mathews, Chase Osborne and freshman newcomer Jack Dingman finished 14th, 15th and 21st respectively with 6K times of 18:42, 18:44 and 18:59. The trio helped ECU top regionally-ranked Campbell who was slotted No. 13 in the preseason USTFCCCA Southeast Region rankings.

The women, led by Abby Yourkavitch, freshman newcomer Madeline Hill and Lindsay Yentz, ended up in third place behind two regionally-ranked foes Duke (No. 6) and host Elon (No.7). Yourkavitch crossed the 4K finish line in 14:01 while hill and Yentz followed with times of 14:19 (14th) and 14:26 (16th).

Up Next: Following the Virginia Invitational, the Pirates will head to Bethlehem, Pa. Oct. 1 for the Paul Short Run.
