ECU Opens Road Swing At Tulsa
January 10, 2022 | Women's Basketball
Â
GREENVILLE, N.C. – After the first game in 18 days, the East Carolina women's basketball team will continue its gauntlet of four games in eight days as the Pirates take on Tulsa on Tuesday night.
East Carolina (7-7, 0-1 AAC) went toe-to-toe with UCF in its conference opener, but a scoring drought in the fourth quarter was the difference as the Pirates fell 52-43. Against the Knights, one of the best defensive and rebounding teams in the league, East Carolina held its own thanks to season-best performances from Tylar Bennett, Raven Johnson and Morgan Moseley. All three played a season-high in minutes, including a career-high for Moseley, and each had at least eight rebounds. Bennett was a defensive anchor for the Pirates, grabbing 11 rebounds while blocking a career-high seven shots, which is tied for the third highest single-game total in ECU history. Johnson, making her second start of the season, had her first double-double since the season-opener of the 2019-20 season and the fifth of her career, finishing with 10 points and a game-high 12 rebounds. It was the first time East Carolina had a pair of players with at least 10 rebounds each since 2018. Moseley played a career-high 31 minutes and pulled down eight rebounds, all on the defensive end, while adding seven points, two assists and a career-best three steals.
Taniyah Thompson is second in the league in points per game, averaging 17.5 points after scoring 13 points against UCF to lead ECU. That snapped a streak of four straight games with at least 20 points for the junior guard, the longest streak by an ECU player since 2015. Thompson is now 80 points away from becoming the 24th player in ECU history to reach 1,000 career points. Fueled by Bennett's seven blocks, ECU had a season-high 10 rejections against UCF, the most since blocking 10 shots against South Florida on Dec. 28, 2014. ECU is now 19th in the country in blocked shots with 70, which Tiara Chambers (21) and Bennett (20) are ranked second and third in the AAC, respectively. The Pirates are ranked 12th in the country in turnovers forced, averaging 22.79 per game, 13th in the nation in steals with 160, and 18th in offensive rebounds, grabbing 15.8 per game. Â Rounding out the top-25 rankings for the Pirates is free throw attempts, as ECU ranks 23rd in the country having gotten to the line 277 times.
Like East Carolina, Tulsa (11-2, 1-1 AAC) is coming off a loss, falling at Houston 80-67. The Golden Hurricane was outscored 33-9 in the second quarter and never got closer than 11 points the rest of the way. It was the second loss in three games for Tulsa after starting the season 10-0, although the Golden Hurricane did pick up a 72-69 road win over Memphis to open AAC play. Tulsa leads the league in scoring offense, averaging 74.3 points. That offense has been well balanced, as Maya Mayberry leads the team with 14.8 points per game while her sister Wyvette Mayberry averages 13.3. The pair are two of six Tulsa players averaging at least 9.0 points. The Mayberry sisters are also the top two three point options on one of the best shooting teams in the country. Tulsa leads the nation in three-point field goal percentage, shooting 41.5% from beyond the arc while Maya Mayberry is sixth in the country with a three-point field goal percentage of 49.1. As a team, the Golden Hurricane does a great job of limiting miscues, averaging just 10.6 turnovers per game, which is second in the NCAA and its assist-to-turnover ratio of 1.54 is also second in the nation.
Tulsa holds a slight 14-12 edge in the series between the two programs, thanks to sweeping the season series a year ago. The Golden Hurricane earned a 68-54 home win and then won 68-59 in Greenville 10 days later. The last East Carolina win in the series came on Feb. 19, 2020 when the Pirates won 59-42 at home. East Carolina is 4-7 all-time against Tulsa in the Reynolds Center, having last won there on March 2, 2019.
Tipoff at the Reynolds Center is scheduled for 7:30 p.m., and the game will be shown on ESPN+. Fans can also follow the live stats here.
