October 13, 2022 | Cross Country
GREENVILLE, N.C. – The East Carolina cross country program will host the 2022 Pirate Invitational on Friday at Overton's Lake Kristi cross country course.
The women's 6K race is set to begin at 4 p.m. with the men's 8K getting underway at 4:45. The event will be free to the public.
Teams expected to be in attendance include Coastal Carolina, Elon, George Washington and UNCW, among others.
In the 2021 edition of the meet a year ago, the Pirate women claimed a dominant victory with 24 points scored. The Pirate men placed two in the top 10 and five in the top 15 for a second-place finish behind UNC Greensboro.
Quotable
"We're really excited about the women's group," said Head Cross Country Coach Billy Caldwell. "Racing at home for the first time this year… It's going to be a good field with some regionally ranked teams. We're looking to build on what we've done the last four weeks of training and we're looking forward to getting some athletes back and competing against a quality field.
"On the men's side, we've had four good weeks of training since out last race," continued Caldwell. "The group is looking strong and ready to run together as we compete against some quality teams from around the region. This should be a great test against quality competition as we prepare for the conference meet."

The East Carolina cross country team competed at App State's Firetower Project Meet on Sept. 16. The Pirate men earned a third-place team finish with 73 points while the women took sixth with 150 points.
The ECU women were led by Alyssa Zack on the day, finishing fifth in a time of 17:57.28 over 5K. Hayley Whoolery finished 11th in 18:02.10 to join Zack in the top 10 in the meet. Allysa Combs (41st), Makayla Obremski (60th), Emily Baba (81st) and Hailey Yentz (96th) rounded out the Pirate lineup.
Austin Mathews led the ECU men with a fifth-place finish in 25:40.8 over 8K. Chase Osborne took 10th and J Henry Lyon took 15th for the Pirates. Ted Sielatycki (22nd), Elliot Kleckner (24th), Conner O'Shea (28th) and Colin McCauley (35th) rounded out the lineup.
