
Pirates Compete at Firetower Project Meet

BOONE, N.C. – The East Carolina cross country team competed on Friday at App State's Firetower Project Meet. The Pirate men earned a third place team finish with 73 points while the women took sixth with 150 points.

The ECU women were led by Alyssa Zack on the day, finishing fifth in a time of 17:57.28 over 5K. Hayley Whoolery finished 11th in 18:02.10 to join Zack in the top 10 in the meet. Allysa Combs (41st), Makayla Obremski (60th), Emily Baba (81st) and Hailey Yentz (96th) rounded out the Pirate lineup.
"The women had some really strong individual performances lead by a 5th and 11th place finish," said Head Cross Country Coach Billy Caldwell. "Excited to see the group as a whole continue to progress over the next few weeks going into the championship portion of the year"

Austin Mathews led the ECU men with a fifth-place finish in 25:40.8 over 8K. Chase Osborne took 10th and J Henry Lyon took 15th for the Pirates. Ted Sielatycki (22nd), Elliot Kleckner (24th), Conner O'Shea (28th) and Colin McCauley (35th) rounded out the lineup.

"The men battled hard," continued Caldwell. "With almost half of these guys running their first 8k ever. They understand the new style of racing now and will continue to improve. The thing I was most excited about was then running together as a pack this is important as we continue to build fitness and move into the championship portion of the season"
