February 24, 2023 | Softball
GREENVILLE, N.C. – The East Carolina softball team earned a sweep on day two of the Pirate Clash, defeating Radford 8-3 in the first game and pulling out a 5-4 win over Saint Francis in the night cap game on Friday night at Max R. Joyner Stadium.
Â
The Pirates (11-3) will have one more game in the tournament on Saturday or Sunday depending on Saturday's weather.
Â
Game One: East Carolina 8, Radford 3
Both teams would struggle to generate any offense in the first inning with the Highlanders stranding one runner on base in the top of the first inning. Radford would get on the scoreboard first with a double to left center followed by a single to give the Highlanders an early 2-0 lead.
Â
ECU's offense would respond in the bottom of the second with four runs on five hits to pull ahead 4-2. The next two innings would be brief as both pitchers took control, but Radford would make the Pirates sweat a little after getting one run in to make the score 4-3 in the top of the fifth inning.
Â
Holding a 5-3 lead going into the bottom the sixth, the Pirates would add three runs and Madisyn Davis would strike out two Highlanders and ground one out to give the Pirates the win.
Â
Jordan Hatch (5-2) tossed nine strikeouts and allowed three runs for the win while Malorie Reeves (0-2) allowed seven hits and five runs in the loss.
Â
Taylor Edwards recorded a game-high four RBI and nine Pirates tallied at least one hit.
Â
Â
Game Two: East Carolina 5, Saint Francis 4
Saint Francis would get the scoring started right away as the Red Flash took a 1-0 lead heading into the bottom of the first inning. Edwards would hit a triple and score on an error to knot the game at 1-1. Tessa Thompson would drive one over the wall to left field to put the Red Flash back ahead 2-1 but Bailee Wilson would hit a double to score Jocelyn Alonso and tie the game again.
Â
The Red Flash would take a 4-2 lead in the top of the third but ECU would chip away over the next four innings, capped off by Edwards reaching base on an error to allow Taudrea Sinnie to cross home for the winning run.
Â
Addy Bullis (6-0) tossed four strikeouts in 4.1 innings in the circle for the win while Grace Vesco (3-2) gave up two runs in the final innings for the loss. Â
