GREENVILLE, N.C. – The East Carolina women's basketball team is set to open the 2023 AAC Tournament on Tuesday as they take on the winner of the first-round matchup between Tulane and Cincinnati.
Â
The game is set for a 9 p.m. EST tipoff, 25 minutes following conclusion of the 7 p.m. quarterfinal. All AAC Tournament games will be available for streaming on ESPN+ with the Championship Game also being broadcast in ESPNU.
Â
Regular Season Rewind
The Pirates enter the tournament having gone 6-1 in February, including six-straight wins, the longest streak since 2014-15. The team's 20 wins overall are the most since that same season and just the 10th 20-win campaign in program history. 11 wins in league play also matched the most in AAC play since joining the conference.
Â
Tournament History
The Pirates No. 3 seed is the second highest in program history and the second time ever that the team has finished third. The previous third-place finish was in 2006-07 when the Pirates went on to win the Conference USA Tournament for the program's second-ever NCAA bid.
Â
Record Breakers
Amiya Joyner has already broken the freshman rebounding record (249) and stands fourth points (293) and tied for third in blocks (41). Danae McNeal ranks seventh in single season steals (87). Joyner is also nearing the freshman assists list (52 needing 56) and McNeal the single season scoring list (527 needing 541).
Â
In addition to the record-breaking efforts of Joyner and McNeal, the Pirates are inching ever closer to two team records: season steals and turnovers forced. The team ranks third in steals with 384 and fourth in turnovers forced with 720. The records in those categories are 407 and 760. The team is also just four blocks away from the top 10 in program history in the category. The Pirates are also allowing just 56.2 points per game, the record is 56.8.
What An Honor
For their efforts, Kim McNeill was named AAC Coach of the Year, Danae McNeal was named Defensive Player of the Year and Most Improved Player, and Amiya Joyner was named Freshman of the Year.
