GREENVILLE, N.C. – No. 14 East Carolina plays its final American Athletic Conference home series of the year this weekend, entertaining Memphis for three games from Lewis Field at Clark-LeClair Stadium. The teams begin the set at 6 p.m. Friday evening before matching up Saturday at 4 p.m. and Sunday at 1 p.m.

Patrick Johnson and Jay Sonnhalter will have the call on ESPN+ for the first two games before Mike Mullis joins Johnson for Sunday's finale. As always, Scooter Rogers and Dr. Gary Overton will handle the radio broadcast locally on 94.3 The Game.

The Pirates (35-14, 12-6 AAC) enter the home stretch of the regular season just a half game back of Houston for first place in the league standings after sweeping Cincinnati on the road last weekend. The Cougars travel to Tulane this weekend before hosting Cincinnati next week. Wichita State, who plays host to South Florida, lurks a game and a half back of ECU in third place.

East Carolina won a 13-inning marathon Wednesday evening in Norfolk, downing Old Dominion 4-1 to improve its road record to 9-9 and complete the season series sweep of the Monarchs. The Pirates struck out a season second-best 18 batters while the offense chipped in with 11 hits. Ryley Johnson and Alec Makarewicz teamed up to drive in the decisive runs in extras. Wyatt Lunsford-Shenkman collected his fourth win of the campaign and Landon Ginn notched his first save of 2023 as the duo covered the final four frames on the mound.

ECU leads the American Conference and is 14th nationally in team earned run average (3.97). The Pirate pitching staff has struck out 497 batters against 155 walks in 435.1 innings of work. Opposing hitters are batting just .232 off of the unit. Lunsford-Shenkman tops the club in appearances (22) and ERA (2.03).

On the offensive side, Justin Wilcoxen paces the squad in batting average (.331) and is one of three East Carolina players with 50 hits. Josh Moylan and Jacob Jenkins-Cowart, who share the team lead with nine home runs, have also put up 24 doubles and three triples between them. ECU is batting .286 collectively with 91 doubles, 12 triples, 55 home runs, 230 walks drawn and 65 stolen bases.

Memphis (26-22, 8-10 AAC), under the direction of first year head coach Kerrick Jackson, finds itself in a three-way tie for fourth place with Cincinnati and Tulane. The Tigers picked up a home sweep of South Florida last weekend and have won five in a row as they head to Greenville. Memphis ranks sixth in the conference in batting average (.259) and third in ERA (4.96). Utility player Austin Baskin is the reigning AAC Player of the Week after batting 9-for-15 (.600) with two doubles, a home run, seven RBI, six runs scored and three walks against the Bulls. LHP Dalton Kendrick's 12 saves are tied for the NCAA Division I lead.

East Carolina leads the all-time series with Memphis by a 43-19 count and has won 14 of the last 16 meetings, including four straight. The Pirates swept the Tigers in Memphis last season and took all four encounters in Greenville back in 2021.

Lunsford-Shenkman Tabbed AAC Pitcher of the Week
Sophomore RHP Wyatt Lunsford-Shenkman earned American Athletic Conference Pitcher of the Week honors for the first time in career May 8 after throwing six perfect innings against North Carolina and Cincinnati. He backstopped the Pirates to a win in the series finale with the Bearcats, going a career-long five frames with three strikeouts as ECU knocked off Cincinnati 6-5 in 10 innings to sweep the set. An anchor of the Pirate bullpen, Lunsford-Shenkman leads the club in appearances (21) and earned run average (2.19) while opposing batters are hitting just .201 against him.

Head Coach Cliff Godwin: Owns 339 career wins and is second on the East Carolina career coaching wins list ...
