Pirates Tripped Up by South Florida, 54-40
January 28, 2024 | Women's Basketball
TAMPA, Fla. - The East Carolina women's basketball team lost to the South Florida Bulls, 54-40, on Sunday afternoon in the Yuengling Center. The Pirates led at the half but scored only 14 points in the second half a South Florida pulled away.
The game was a classic tale of two halves. In the first, the Pirates (11-8, 4-4 AAC) got off to a dream start thanks to the red-hot play of Danae McNeal. McNeal scored 21 points while grabbing seven rebounds and snagging two steals in the first. The seven rebounds bested the guard's previous career high for a game of six.
The Pirates also did well in limiting the Bulls' (12-9, 3-3 AAC) offense in the first half, holding the host to 7-33 from the field and just 2-12 from three-point range.
The game took a turn sharply in the second half and it started with an intentional foul call on Tatyana Wyche just over a minute into the third. The free throws and subsequent possession allowed South Florida to turn an eight-point ECU lead into a six-point margin of their own on a short 14-0 spurt.
The Pirates were able to cut it to two at one point in the third but never got closer than that again, fueled in part by McNeal losing steam in her shooting and ECU not getting scoring support elsewhere. McNeal ended up with just four points in the second half and for the game the rest of the team shot just 5-28 from the field for only 15 points.
McNeal ended the day with 25 points, nine boards and three steals as she continues a run of tremendous play.
