GutiƩrrez Strike Snags Point for Pirates Against UAB, 2-2
October 20, 2024 | Soccer
GREENVILLE, N.C. ā The East Carolina soccer team stole a Senior Day draw with a late goal in a 2-2 result against UAB on Sunday afternoon in Johnson Stadium. The Pirates had to respond from the Blazers jumping ahead twice but managed leveling goals on both times of asking.
Ā
UAB (5-4-4, 2-2-3 AAC) got the scoring going early with an eighth minute goal. The tally came in short order after a Pirates (6-3-6, 3-2-3 AAC) strike by Sydney Schnell was waived off for offside and came from a firmly struck shot by Jette Zimmer with an assist on the cross by Avery Berryman.
Ā
Schnell did eventually get on the board in the 32nd minute when she again got narrowly behind the defense, this time on a long service from Lucy Fazackerley. With the keeper charging out, the senior forward took her chip from distance and landed it just over the goal line giving Anika Toth no chance at keeping it out. Mackenzie Smith was credited with a second assist on the goal for her pass to Fazackerley.
Ā
The goal was Schnell's team-leading sixth of the season, a new career high. She now leads the Pirates with 14 points on the season as she's contributed a pair of assists as well.
Ā
UAB moved back in front as they capitalized on a defensive miscue in the 66th minute as Maiya Clark fed Zimmer for her brace.
Ā
It looked like the 2-1 margin would go final as the Blazers managed to repel multiple Pirate attacks, but off of a Smith service from a free kick in the 89th minute bounced out to Isabella Gutiérrez who rifled on into the back of the net with a right-footer from outside of the box.
Ā
It was Gutiérrez' first game back from injury and she made the most of it, showing solid form in her midfield position and taking her opportunity to strike and equalizer with just 1:46 remaining.
