GREENVILLE, N.C. – The East Carolina soccer team is set for its regular season finale on Thursday night with a 7 p.m. home tilt against the Rice Owls. The game is free to attend for fans and for those unable to be there in person, it will be available for streaming on ESPN+ with Zach Berly and Courtney Layton on the call.
In celebration of Halloween, the game will be a Black Out and fans are encouraged to wear back, or even better, wear their Halloween costumes to the game to make it a spooky environment for the visiting Owls. There will also be a trick-or-treating event taking place from the time that gates open (6 p.m.) until game time.
Last Time Out
The Pirates turned in a strong road outing with a 2-0 win over Florida Atlantic on Sunday. Samantha Moxie and Caitlen-Star Dolan Boodram scored first half goals before the Pirates used a steady second half to hold serve and keep the Owls off the board. Sydney Schnell and Juliana Viera notched assists on the two goals while on the other side of the ball, Maeve English made a save on her way to her seventh clean sheet of the season.
Scouting Rice
The Owls have consistently been one of the top sides in the American Athletic Conference this season and despite entering Thursday on a two-game skid, their 11-4-2 record is indicative of their success. A potent offense with 26 goals on a huge 246-shot output. Leah Chancey has led the way individually with nine goals and four assists for an impressive 22 points which ranks atop the American leaderboard. On the other side of the ball, Faith Hutchins has played every minute in goal with seven shutouts and a terrific .837 save percentage.
Series History
The Pirates and Owls have a fairly substantial history from their CUSA days, with ECU holding a 5-2-2 edge in the series with all games happening from 2005 to 2013. That 2013 game, the most recent in the series, was a 2-2 draw in Houston. Stephanie Seagrave and Kendall Frey scored the goals for the Pirates that day but it was an 85th minute goal by Rice which sealed the draw with neither team able to produce an overtime winner.
Tournament Time
With the win at Florida Atlantic, the Pirates have already clinched their spot in the American Athletic Conference Tournament for the fifth straight season. Now the battle for seeding takes center stage.
Weekly Honors
On Monday, Juliana Viera earned her first career American Athletic Conference Defensive Player of the Week nod after registering an assist and helping the Pirates to a clean sheet against Florida Atlantic. Samantha Moxie also earned an Honorable Mention recognition for scoring the game winning goal in the win.
Iron Woman
Abby Sowa has played in every game and not come off for a second since Oct. 17, 2021. She has played 5,160 consecutive minutes and has been on the pitch for all 1,260 minutes this season. That's two full seasons and 57 full games.
Alone at the Top
After nearly 16 years, there has been a change at the top of the ECU career starts list with Maeve English now claiming the top spot with 83 starts in Purple and Gold.
Iron Women II
Annabelle Abbott is just behind English with her 81 career starts, set to pass the previous program mark. The two players are both set to break the program record for career appearances at 85 in the first game of the conference tournament, both sitting at 83 entering Thursday.
